Follow up
Follow-up care is important because it helps to identify changes in the condition of the oral mucosa. The purpose of follow-up care is to check for recurrence (the return of cancer in the primary site) or metastasis (the spread of cancer to another part of the body).
At these visits, your doctor will:
  • Review your medical history.
  • Complete physical examination.
  • Check for new cancerous growth which can develop in the mouth, throat or other areas of the head and neck in patients treated for cancer.
Your doctor may run follow-up tests such as:
  • Blood tests.
  • MRI or CT scans: These scans take detailed pictures of areas inside the body at different angles.
