Oral Cancer Foundation Registration
IDA’s Oral Cancer Foundation (OCF) is a registered non-profit voluntary organization
dedicated to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research,
advocacy and patient support activities. This includes those oral cancers that occur
in the mouth itself, in the back of the mouth known as the oropharynx and on the
exterior lip. There are two distinct pathways by which oral cancer develop in people.
One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long term historic problem and
cause, and the other is through exposure to the HPV-16 virus (human papilloma virus
version 16). A small percentage of people (under 5 %) do get oral cancers from no
currently identified cause. It is currently believed that these are likely related
to some genetic predisposition.
IDA trains Dental professionals for early detection and treatment. They can then
get their clinics certified as S.P.O.T. Centre and thereby IDA tries to bridge the
gap that exists in oral cancer public health, education, training & human resource
development and preventive oral cancer research. OCF disseminates authentic and
useful information through innovative methods to educate and enlighten people on
oral cancer risk factors and how to minimise the risk of disease.
OCF has a number of collaborations in the pipeline with TIFR, BARC, Tata Memorial
Centres and others. On the anvil are Outreach Mobile Clinics in association with
NGOs for free screening and evaluation. OCF also plans to organize sponsored activity
on Oral Cancer Awareness Week which will help in raising awareness besides raising
